Viral Post Reignites Debate Over Immigrant Access to U.S. Welfare Benefits

A viral political post is drawing attention online after asking Americans whether all immigrants should be banned from receiving social welfare benefits.

The question simplifies a complicated system. Undocumented immigrants are already generally ineligible for major federal programs such as Supplemental Security Income and TANF, while eligibility for lawful immigrants varies depending on immigration status, length of U.S. residency and the specific benefit involved.

The Trump administration has pushed for tighter restrictions on taxpayer-funded benefits for people without legal status and has expanded efforts to verify immigration eligibility. The Justice Department recently warned states that some federal funding could be at risk if agencies fail to report undocumented immigrants as required under the administration’s interpretation of federal law.
