Trump Promises Americans $5,000 — Do You Believe He Will Actually Deliver?

President Donald Trump has made one of the biggest promises of the 2026 midterm campaign: $5,000 for every adult American citizen if Republicans win both the House and Senate in November.

Trump announced the proposal at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, calling the payment a “Trump Dividend.”

“If the Republicans win, you win with us and you get $5,000,” Trump told supporters.

The White House has since publicly promoted the proposal, arguing that America's economic performance could allow the government to return money directly to citizens.

But there is an important point Americans should know: the $5,000 checks have NOT been approved or sent.

The proposal would require congressional action, and its enormous cost has already raised questions in Washington. Estimates suggest that sending $5,000 to every adult U.S. citizen could cost more than $1.2 trillion.

Trump has argued that government revenues, including money associated with tariffs, could help make the payments possible. Critics and budget experts question whether those revenues would be anywhere near enough to cover such a massive program.

There is another reason some Americans may be skeptical.

Trump previously supported proposals for other large nationwide payments, including DOGE-related dividends and tariff rebates, but those universal payments did not ultimately reach Americans.

Supporters, however, argue that this proposal is different. The White House is publicly backing the “Trump Dividend,” and Trump has continued defending his ability to deliver the payments.

That leaves Americans with a simple question:
