Be Honest: Why Do You Support or Oppose Donald Trump?

President Donald Trump remains one of the most debated political figures in the United States, with Americans expressing very different views about his leadership, policies and approach to government.

For many supporters, their opinion of Trump is connected to issues such as the economy, immigration, national security, taxes, energy policy or his willingness to challenge established political institutions.

For critics, concerns may center on many of those same issues, as well as Trump's rhetoric, use of presidential power, foreign policy decisions and approach to political opponents and the news media.

Recent polling illustrates just how different those views can be. A Reuters/Ipsos survey conducted September 17–20, 2026 found that 32% of U.S. adults approved of Trump's overall job performance. Among Republicans, approval was considerably higher at 73%.

But numbers alone do not explain why individual Americans feel the way they do.

Some people support a president because of specific policies. Others focus more heavily on leadership style, character, economic conditions or how they believe the country is changing.
